Odds and Ends

Tickling My Fancy
You know what happens when a 2 lane road narrows to a 1 lane, don't you? I think we've all been there at one time or another. There's always someone that doesn't want to wait in line so they speed up and try to squeeze into the line farther up. I love it when everyone in line gets together and won't let him in. You know what I like even better? When I'm in the line that's holding him up. Tee hee.  Juvenile?  Maybe. But it still puts a smile on my face. I had a smile on my face today  :)

A Cheap and Delicious Supper From the Past
As I've mentioned before, my ex and I were foster parents for 13 years.  We had 69 kids come and stay with us...for a night, a weekend, a month...and 4 of them became permanent members of our family.  I was able to stay home during that time, thank God.  Between sick kids, four loads of laundry a day, grocery shopping...oh yea shopping...let me tell you about that.  6 boxes of cereal a week, 5 gallons of milk, and lots and lots of cheap meals.  But this was back in the 80's so when I say I spent about $100-$120 a week for groceries, that doesn't sound like much does it?  Back then it was a lot!  One of their favorites was my sloppy joes.  So simple...one lb hamburger with a little onion thrown in and a can of cream of mushroom soup.  Of course I was doubling or tripling the recipe, depending on the number of kids we had that night.  But with fries or tater tots it was a cheap meal for a lot of kids.  Or someone on a fixed income.  Now almost 30 years later, my kids still love the "brown" sloppy joes the best and they've all passed it on to the next generation.  You really should try it, its delicious.  I know...not heart healthy in today's world, but still a good quick throw-together meal that satisfies a kids hunger.  Throw in some fruit and vegetables if it'll make you feel better....and skip the fries.  There are blogs out there in cyberland that share their recipes with the world and I'm sure they're very good.  But I thought I'd just throw one of mine out there for those of you with too many kids or too little money to go for the fancy meals.  Wait till I share my Baked Cheese Hot Dogs!  Yummy!

Pet Peeve of the Day
Two days ago I stopped to fill up at Gas America.  The price was $3.02 so I was pleased.  Then one mile down the highway the price was $3.09.  Not much different but why?  Yesterday Gas America had it for $2.99...cool!  Today I was putting gas in a client's car.  I passed Speedway ($3.45!) and one mile down the road got it for $3.09.  By the time I got off work, it was $3.45 everywhere.  Now the problem I have is how can they justify raising it that much in one day?  And who dictates when the price goes up and what it will be?  What?  Do they all have a little red phone like at the White House and someone calls all the little red phones at once and says "Okay, its time to raise prices and we'll all raise it to this"?  What if one station wants to grab a lot more customers and doesn't want to raise his prices?  Can he do that or will all the other stations lock his doors....like Cooper Tire did to its workers when they didn't want to play the company's game?   And they've got us over a barrel...literally...an oil barrel.  We have to have gas so we have to pay what they say.  But what if no one bought gas for a day or two.  Would we make a difference?  I don't think corporate America plays very fair.

Quotes of the Day:
Oil prices have fallen lately. We include this news for the benefit of gas stations, which otherwise wouldn't learn of it for six months. ~William D. Tammeus

And I finally found the solution for tailgaters:

I hooked up my accelerator pedal in my car to my brake lights. I hit the gas, people behind me stop, and I'm gone. ~Steven Wright
