Heartbeat Bill in Ohio

Issues On My Mind
There is a bill before the State Senate that is called the "Heartbeat Bill".  It has already passed the State House but because of miscommunication was stalled in the State Senate in 2011.  What this bill says is that abortion would become illegal in the state of Ohio if the doctor performing the abortion detects a heartbeat (sometimes as early as 6 weeks)...thus signifying life.  First, before he could perform the abortion, he has to check for a heartbeat.  Second, he has to inform the mother that her infant's heart is beating.  And third, that unborn fetus is protected by law from being aborted so he would be unable to do anything.

There are up to 20 amendments to this bill which would include all the things that people worry about such as the health of the mother, rape, incest and so on.  So those issues should stand up to arguments.

Now I can see where this could cause some problems.  Mothers could go to another state to get their abortions or they could resort to "back-alley" abortions like were done before Wade vs Roe, which I'm sure a few unethical doctors would be willing to perform thus endangering the mother's life.  Now I'm also sure that many pro-choice supporters can come up with a lot of other reasons why this bill would be so wrong and what terrible things could ensue.

I understand the reasons why some people choose to be pro-choice but I have my own reasons for being pro-life.  And since I am pro-life and this is my blog, I am going to mention a few things that I think about and then I'll get off this subject.  In the United States there are approximately 1,200,000 abortions a year.  That's a lot of babies that will never see life.  When I think of pro-choice, I once heard it said that the choice should have been made before the baby was conceived, either through abstinence or with a condom or other birth control.  After this baby has a heartbeat, it becomes a killing.  Abortion should never be used as birth control.  And there is pain that is felt by the baby or technically, the fetus, during this killing.  However short this pain is, it can only be classified as torture.  If having a baby is going to be an inconvience or is just not in your future plans at this time, then please make the choice before it is conceived...not after.
And that's just my opinion.  I respect your right to feel differently.

Though we may not see eye-to-eye on this subject I still welcome your comments.

My Quotes for the Day
"I've noticed that everyone who is for abortion is already born." - Ronald Reagan

"Simple morality dictates that unless and until someone can prove the unborn human is not alive, we must give it the benefit of the doubt and assume it is (alive). And, thus, it should be entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." - Ronald Reagan 1982

"It is a poverty that a "child must die", So that you may live as you wish... - Mother Teresa

We must not be surprised when we hear of murders, killings, of wars, or of hatred...If a mother can kill her own child, what is left but for us to kill each other? - Mother Teresa

On a Lighter Note
I watched the Golden Globes last night but only to see what Ricky Gervais had to say.  You know he only says what we are probably all thinking anyway...he just doesn't care.  But congrats to "Modern Family" for winning for Best Television Series-Comedy or Musical.  And a special congrats to Morgan Freeman for taking home the Cecil B. DeMille Award.  You deserve it!  And Elton John...I think you should have won too.

And to a Hollywood icon - Happy Birthday Betty White.  Not many of us will ever reach 90 yrs old much less be able to still be working and making people laugh like you do.

You make good points Karen. I agree that abortion should never be used as birth control. I could never have an abortion. But, here is a concern; abortions were done in the 18th & 19th centuries - very crudely. Women will always have abortions for one reason or another. I think a doctor's office is better than a dirty office off some alley. Sex is so complicated!

That's the sad truth. There will always be women needing abortions and doctors willing to do them. I just wish women would take a more active role in preventing pregnancy all together instead of waiting till there's a baby life at stake.
